Google My Business Optimisation
ESSENTIAL FOR LOCAL LISTING AND SEO

Google My Business (GMB) is a free tool that allows you to manage how your business appears in Google search results, Google Maps and other local Search features.

GMB is one of the best ways to boost your local SEO efforts and thus crucial for your SEO strategy.  It is a proven, tried and tested way to generate customers and to get your business on to the first page of the search results.

The details you provide in your GMB profile are used in a number of different ways:

  • populating the knowledge panel
  • filling out the local pack
  • populating Google Maps
  • providing voice search results
  • assisting with Google App search results

The value of an optimised GMB listing cannot be underestimated.  Google has around 90% of the worldwide search engine market share and according to Google, four out of five people use search engines to find information like a company’s business hours, address, phone number, online reviews and more.

Setting up your GMB listing is quick and easy, and once it is done, you can begin the optimisation process to improve your search presence.  Similar to other online tools it is not a one-time effort and requires maintenance and optimisation.

OPTIMISE YOUR LISTING
1
Complete all required information
Add as much information as possible, it helps to engage the audience.  The quality of your content will help improve your local pack position, giving you a better chance of appearing for a broader range of searches.  A top tip is to keep in mind the keywords that you want to be found for and structure your content around those terms.
2
Add Photos
Adding photos not only makes your listing look attractive but also helps people find you.
When deciding on which photos to use, think of images that will attract your customers and showcase the best face of your business.  Select the cover photo wisely and consider adding an evening cover.  Don’t stop at external images, customers are more likely to interact if they can see the business including internal, product and even employee images.  Your profile photo is as equally important, as this will appear when you make changes, post or reply to reviews.
3
Add products or services
Not all listings have the option to add products or services, this is dependent on the industry you have selected when setting up the account.  Adding products or services will instantly give your customers an understanding of what you offer.
4
Don’t be frightened by reviews
Lots of positive reviews will make your listing stand out so encourage your customers to leave reviews.  Be sure to respond to your reviews, leaving thanks for a positive review will encourage others to follow.  Equally important is responding to negative reviews, it shows you are taking reviews seriously and customer service is of paramount importance.
5
Posts are like ‘mini-ads’
Regular posts will not only boost your SEO efforts but they will keep your existing and potential customers interested.  Showcase your products and services, let your customers knows about promotions or business changes or highlight new and interesting things on your website.
6
Utilise the GMB API to manage at scale
If you are a business with multiple locations then it is worth investing in the API to enable granular management at scale.  The API allows you to add locations, manage and track updates across all locations and businesses.
7
Use insights to optimise your page
The inbuilt GMB insights tool provides valuable information regarding how customers are interacting with your company online.  The data and insights collected over time will not only benefit your GMB listing but your overall business strategy.
8
Consider Industry Specific GMB Listings
Industry specific GMB listings have the advantage of showcasing industry specific content.
GMB for healthcare providers, auto dealters, hotels and chains all offer additional features allowing you to display additional attributes such as booking appointments, making reservations, nearby amenities, class ratings, and much more.
